Leyton Orient Hoping To Sign Former Star This Summer

After a promising 11th-placed finish, Leyton Orient will be hoping to improve their squad this summer, and could bring a former player back to Brisbane Road.

The League One outfit surprised a lot of people with their solid campaign last season. This new-found optimism has led the O’s to venture further into the market ahead of another important year.

According to Alan Nixon, on his Patreon site, Burnley’s third-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux is being touted to return to his former employer. Since joining the Lancashire outfit in June 2023, the Chilean hasn’t even featured in an official competition game.

The 30-year-old has been on the books for top sides like Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, but wasn’t given a chance at either. Vigouroux’s spell at Orient between 2020 and 2023 gave him a platform to shine. The Burnley ‘keeper featured 152 times for the League One side and was a fan favourite before being snapped up by the former.

Richie Wellens’ side could be demanded a large fee for Vigouroux if they hope for an agreement though. Due to the Chilean’s contract with the recently-relegated side only expiring in the summer of 2026. James Trafford and Arijanet Muric have been Vincent Kompany’s preferred choices, but with the Belgian’s move to Bayern Munich, a change in fortune could be incoming for the 30-year-old.

Vigouroux is well-travelled in terms of club football endeavours. The former Orient player has appeared for a number of sides including: Hyde United, Swindon Town, Waterford FC, and Chilean outfit Everton CD. This move could offer some familiarity for the goalkeeper in a crucial stage of his career.

Writer’s View

With a new manager in a different league, Burnley may give Vigouroux a chance next campaign. But with the potential sale of Trafford and the solidity that Muric offers, that possibility seems fairly slim. The money made for the Englishman will likely fund a new goalkeeping replacement.

If the 30-year-old wants guaranteed playing time at a club that values him highly, then the step down to League One is worth it. The O’s seem fairly ambitious in pushing for a play-off place next year and that could perfectly align with Vigouroux’s needs. A return to Leyton Orient seems like a great move on paper.
