Huge Ipswich Town Managerial Update Emerges

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is set to end speculation linking him with a move away from Portman Road by committing his future to the club, according to David Ornstein.

The 38-year-old has been the subject of heavy interest by a host of Premier League clubs in recent weeks. Since completing back-to-back promotions with the Tractor Boys, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and Manchester United have all expressed an interest in tempting him away from Suffolk.

McKenna was the mastermind behind Ipswich’s meteoric rise. Following on from their second-placed finish in League One during the 2022/23 campaign, the Northern Irishman matched that in the division higher to end the club’s 22-year absence from the top tier.

That achievement coincided with a raft of managerial movements. First, Roberto de Zerbi was confirmed to have left Brighton, closely followed by Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge. Not one to get caught lagging behind, rumours quickly surfaced that McKenna’s former club Manchester United were looking to part company with Erik ten Hag and had reportedly held talks with representatives of their ex-coach.

News broke earlier today that Chelsea are close to appointing Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca, seemingly leaving Brighton with a free run at one of English football’s brightest young managers. However, it appears as if there has been yet another twist in the tale.

According to The Athletic, Ipswich have persuaded McKenna to retain his role into the new season, where he is set to be rewarded for his success with a new-long term contract.

Details of the deal are yet to emerge, although previous reports stated that Ipswich were prepared to quadruple his current salary. The former Tottenham Hotspur youngster is already under contract until 2027.

Ipswich can now fully focus on the new season ahead, safe in the knowledge that their current leader will be at the helm.

It took a while to reach this conclusion, but Kieran McKenna has absolutely made the right decision. The job he has done at Ipswich has been nothing short of phenomenal and he deserves the opportunity to guide them into the Premier League.

Despite their rise through the leagues, next season will be seen as somewhat of a free hit and his reputation will remain untarnished regardless of what happens. His time at a ‘bigger club’ will come and he should be in no rush to throw himself into the deep end. This can be evidenced by Vincent Kompany, who guided Burnley back to the top tier, stayed put, got relegated and now looks set to land the Bayern Munich job.
