Sheffield Wednesday veteran Barry Bannan has revealed he is in talks over a new deal following the Owls’ 2-0 win over Sunderland this afternoon.
The 34-year-old has been at the club since 2015, making over 400 appearances. His existing deal is set to end in the coming weeks, leading to speculation that his time at Hillsborough may be coming to an end. Following on from last season’s League One play-off success, the former Scotland international has once again been an ever-present, featuring 45 times in all competitions.
It’s been a remarkable campaign for the Yorkshire side. After a dismal start which left them rock bottom, the unknown Danny Rohl was brought in to replace Xisco Munoz in October. However, the German has earned his plaudits and completed the Great Escape this afternoon at the Stadium of Light.
A number of players are out of contract this summer, meaning a busy few weeks lie ahead. Whilst it was uncertain what division they would be playing in next season, decisions had taken a back seat, although it now appears as if talks have started to take place.
Bannan is one of those players, and it appears as if he will extend his stay at the club into a tenth year. Speaking to The Sheffield Star following today’s triumph, the midfielder said:
“I’ve not signed anything yet but I’m confident that I’ll still be here next season from speaking with the manager and stuff.
“I’ve made it quite clear I want to stay here for the rest of my career and I’m 34 now, if I can keep going a year, a year, a year, I can see how far I can go.
“I’m still running around and I’m not feeling my age just yet – as much as I say that, this club can make you feel your age a wee bit! My legs feel good and for as long as I can go, I’ll be a Sheffield Wednesday player.
“It’s a case of getting this out of the way and then sorting it whenever. I am confident I’ll still be here.”
Other players who will see their futures addressed include Liam Palmer, Di’Shon Bernard, Will Vaulks and Josh Windass.

Bannan has made no secret of his desire to remain at Sheffield Wednesday during the last few months. He has been a fantastic servant to the club and few would begrudge him an extension.
The captain’s words, which indicate that he would like to end his career at Hillsborough, suggest a one-year deal is on the cards. Owls’ fans will now be waiting with bated breath to see which of the other out-of-contract stars will remain on board for a second stab at Championship football.
