Derby County Given Transfer Green Light

Cardiff City boss Erol Bulut has opened the door for Derby County to sign midfielder Ebou Adams on a permanent basis this summer.

The 28-year-old headed to the East Midlands on a temporary deal in January. It was a move which suited all parties, with Adams making 11 league outings for the Bluebirds during the first half of the campaign, the majority of which came as a late substitute.

He has played a key role in helping the Rams secure promotion to the Championship, starting all 17 League One fixtures since his arrival. Derby will now return to the second tier after a two-year absence.

There has already been calls for Paul Warne’s side to make the move a permanent one. Rumours surfaced last week that a bid was being prepared, and it does appear as if the Gambian international would be prepared to make the switch. Speaking after their 2-0 win over Carlisle United last weekend, he told BBC Radio Derby:

“I can’t say it – it’s so difficult! It’s never goodbye from me.

“First of all I’m going to enjoy my summer! I don’t know where I’m going to be. I’ll enjoy my summer first and foremost and then we’ll see where we’re at, but I’ve enjoyed every single minute of it and thank you so much for having me here.”

The former Forest Green Rovers man has one year remaining on his contract at Cardiff and will return to Wales for pre-season. However, Bulut has refused to rule out the prospect of a transfer.

Speaking ahead of this afternoon’s curtain closer against Rotherham United, via Derbyshire Live, the 49-year-old addressed the situation:

“I congratulated him for the victory. They got promoted. He was a big part from the season and helped the team a lot to get promoted.

“New season, if we are all together here, we will see how it goes. He is still under contract of Cardiff City – he is a Cardiff City player. So let’s see how he thinks, how his manager is thinking, how the clubs are thinking – Cardiff City and Derby – and we will see.

“I think there was interest in him, very much, and they took him. But if (they want to sign him permanently), they have to discuss with our club.”

Sometimes loan moves just click. This was one of them. It would be no surprise to see Adams arrive at Pride Park for a second stint this summer and it appears as if Cardiff are willing to sanction his exit.

He has one year remaining on his contract at the Bluebirds, but they are unlikely to stand in his way. The midfielder has made just 13 appearances for the club since his switch from Forest Green in 2022, although has suffered his fair share of injury problems. He deserves a shot at the Championship, and with a club that he helped get there.
