Colchester United Hierarchy Want “Change” After Player Meetings

Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley, assistant Nicky Cowley and Sporting Director Dimitri Halajko met with first-team players this week to plan for the 2024/25 League Two season.

The U’s edged to safety in League Two by finishing just three points above the relegation zone in 22nd place. Cowley led the Essex-based side to two wins and a draw from the final five matches to secure the club’s place in the fourth tier for next season.

The former Portsmouth and Lincoln City manager took over at the JobServe Community Stadium in January 2024 and got immediate results. Colchester were unbeaten in 14 of their final 20 matches of the season, recorded by Trasnfermarkt, as Cowley helped the U’s side avoid relegation.

Although the season finished less than a week ago, Colchester’s management team are already preparing their squad for the 2024/25 season. According to Transfermarkt, 14 players will either return to their parent clubs after a loan or are out of contract.

According to reports from the Colchester Gazette, the Cowley brothers and Halajko have already discussed the players’ futures this week. The trio are also expected to announce their retained list next week following the discussions.

When speaking about the player meetings, Cowley said that big changes are coming for the club in terms of playing personnel. However, the 45-year-old believes the tough choices made will ultimately benefit the club long-term.

“There’s going to be a lot of change and there needs to be a lot of change.

“There’s been some really difficult conversations this week, because there’s been some players that have given their all for the cause since we’ve been in and have been really good professionals and have a special place in our heart, as a consequence of them giving their all to the cause.

“But we have to try and do what’s right for the football club and that’s meant for some difficult conversations.”

Writer’s View

When Cowley took the Colchester reins in January, avoiding the drop was the primary target. Now that has been achieved the former Huddersfield coach can start thinking about improving after the club ended 2023/24 in their worst league position since relegation from League One in 2016.

The immediate discussions with players perhaps signal that the U’s manager wants to bring in new personnel to add his stamp on the playing squad. A full transfer market and pre-season could help Cowley and Colchester enter the 2024/25 campaign with positivity and a new approach for a more successful campaign.
