After Oxford United drew with Stevenage on Friday night, Lincoln now find themselves as masters of their own destiny, knowing that two wins from their final two games should see them make the League One play-offs.
Saturday’s clash doesn’t only have severe implications on Lincoln’s season, but Cheltenham’s as well. The Robins find themselves in the middle of a battle for survival and sat in 21st currently, time is running out for them to move out of the bottom four.
After four losses on the bounce, Darrell Clarke’s side gained a huge three points on Tuesday night, defeating Burton Albion who sit directly above them in the table. Significantly, the Robins do also have a game in hand over the Brewers but do have a two point gap to overcome. That win on Tuesday night would’ve done their confidence the world of good and it was a result which kept their survival chances alive.
They do however face a team in fine form in the shape of Lincoln City who have been one of the most consistent sides over the last couple of months. Michael Skubala’s men have lost just one of their last 18 league matches and find themselves in a position where they have a realistic shot at making the play-offs. It’s been some turnaround and if the Imps do reach the post-season, they’re probably the team that all will be wanting to avoid.
With permutations at both ends of the table, its certainly a game to look out for this weekend.
Here’s how two of The Real EFL’s writing team see the game panning out…
“The Imps go to Cheltenham knowing a win is crucial. Whatever happens between Stevenage and Oxford, there’s still a chance of them snatching sixth place. That said, the Robins are fighting for their life, and a win at Burton has given them a glimmer of hope.
“I can’t see them taking anything from this, though. Lincoln have proven to be an astute side in recent weeks, and with one defeat in 18 matches, they’re still pushing forward with an unlikely Championship assault. Even with suspensions and injuries, they should have enough to see off Cheltenham and take their battle to the season’s final day.”

“Oxford’s draw on Friday has given Lincoln’s promotion chances a huge boost and I fully expect them to grab the opportunity with both hands. They’ve demonstrated in recent weeks just how strong they are across the pitch and a strong showing can once again be expected.
“Had Cheltenham not beaten Burton on Tuesday then the writing would’ve well and truly been on the wall but they’ve given themselves a chance and do still have a game in hand over their nearest rivals.
“Points on the board are however more important at this stage of the season and I don’t see the Robins picking up anything from this game either. Lincoln will be even more confident after seeing Oxford drop points and although they can’t let complacency set in, should have enough class to win this with relative ease.”
