Middlesbrough Man Makes Key Decision On Future

Versatile Middlesbrough star Isaiah Jones has signed a new long-term contract at the club, which will keep him at the Riverside Stadium until 2027, it has been confirmed.

Having joined from Tooting and Mitcham United in 2019, Jones has been a key player for Boro over the past three seasons. Across the 2023/24 campaign, the 24-year-old has made 38 appearances in all competitions, bagging seven goals and recording four assists in the meantime.

Jones has been a particularly key player under current Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick, playing 60 times since the former Manchester United midfielder took the reins midway through the 2022/23 season.

Furthermore, his versatility has been key for the manager as Jones has played as both a right winger and a right wingback during Carrick’s stint at the club, even switching over to the left-hand side in certain games.

Despite having a decent campaign at Boro, Jones’ contract with the Teesside outfit was about to enter into its final 12 months, meaning he was free to leave the club next summer. As a result, Middlesbrough have now tied him down to a new deal.

Jones has penned a three-year contract extension at the Riverside Stadium to become the third longest-serving player in the current squad behind centre-back Dael Fry and club captain Jonny Howson, with the latter being at the club since 2017.

“You’re Kidding Aren’t You?” Middlesbrough Boss Gives Bullish Response Following Hull Draw

Carrick spoke earlier this month about the winger’s importance to the team and what he can still look to improve on during his time at Middlesbrough [quotes via The Northern Echo]:

“He’s done well and had a big impact over the course of the season. He had a period where he scored a burst of goals. He’s capable of doing that and probably doing that a little bit more. He’s had an impact in a positive way with his performances though.

“Adding more goals and assists is always the perfect world for any player. That’s not particularly just Izzy individually, it’s the case for any player in general. That’s something, of course, we’d love to see a lot more of. But he’s doing a lot of good things, and we hope that he keeps doing those good things and, hopefully, he’ll get the rewards for it.”

From a business point of view, this makes a lot of sense for Boro. Jones is one of the most valuable players in the squad and still has room to grow. Losing him for free in 12 months would not have been a wise decision.

Carrick will certainly be happy to know that Jones’ future is safe. The versatile wide-man is an important player for the manager and gives him the ability to change formations during a game as he can play in several different positions. Now, the Middlesbrough board just need to sort the head coach’s contract out next.
