Colchester United manager Danny Cowley has called on the fans to help the U’s in their battle against relegation League Two, as the U’s take on Grimsby Town on Tuesday.
Colchester are just one point above the League Two relegation zone but have played two fewer fixtures than 23rd-placed Sutton United. The U’s bounced back from consecutive defeats last time out and recorded an important 3-2 win at Crawley Town on Saturday to boost their chances of survival.
Cowley’s outfit will quickly turn their attention to Tuesday evening’s clash against Grimsby at the JobServe Community Stadium. The Mariners are just five points and one place ahead of their upcoming opponents in League Two and the visitors could be dragged into the relegation dogfight with a defeat in Colchester.
However, the U’s have struggled for consistency on home turf this season, sealing just two League Two victories in their last 13, as recorded by Whoscored. Colchester were unbeaten in five consecutive home matches, winning one and drawing five, before losing 2-1 against the two promoted sides of Wrexham and Stockport.
Despite some patchy recent form, Cowley called on the fans to get behind Colchester in the upcoming clash against Grimsby to boost the club and help seal another important three points. When speaking to the Colchester Gazette ahead of the Mariners’ visit, the 45-year-old emphasised the importance of sticking together to utilise a home advantage.
“It’s going to need another huge effort on Tuesday. It’s so good that we’re at home.
“All the people of Colchester, all the people of Essex, anyone who has Colchester United in their heart, I implore to get to the ground and support us like they did against Stockport and Wrexham, because they can make a huge difference for us.
“It’s another really important game in the history of this football club.”

Colchester can take a big step towards securing League Two safety with a win against Grimsby. Moreover, Cowley appears eager to keep the momentum rolling for the entire club following a huge win at Crawley on Saturday.
Every minimal advantage can make a huge difference come the end of the season. Cowley wants to unite the club and generate a buzz around the JobServe Community Stadium, which could give the U’s a vital edge in this relegation clash.
