York City have recalled Maison Campbell from his loan spell at Scunthorpe United following an injury to goalkeeper Rory Watson.
Campbell joined Scunthorpe in December 2023 on a short-term loan deal and he made just two appearances for the Lincolnshire club. The 20-year-old was expected to stay at the Attis Arena until the end of the 2023/24 campaign, but York activated a 24-hour recall option to return their player on Thursday.
Campbell’s return to the LNER Community Stadium came after Watson’s injury during the Minstermen’s 1-1 National League draw against Halifax Town on Tuesday evening. Watson was making just his sixth York appearance of the campaign before sustaining the injury.
Campbell joined National League North side Scunthorpe on a short-term loan to replace former second-choice Aaron Chapman, who left the club in December 2023. The 20-year-old joined from York as a backup for first-choice Ross Fitzsimons.
However, Campbell made his Iron debut in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup in December and featured in the quarter-final and semi-final victories over Gainsborough Trinity and Cleethorpes Town. First-team opportunities in the National League North were harder to come by, as Fitzsimons has started all 43 of Scunthorpe’s league matches, according to Transfermarkt.
In an official statement, Scunthorpe confirmed Campbell’s departure on their official website and thanked the young goalkeeper for his services at the club.
“We’d like to thank Maison for his efforts while with the club, and wish him well for the future.”

York’s recalling of Campbell might suggest that manager Adam Hinshelwood is looking to provide the 20-year-old with first-team opportunities towards the end of the season. The young ‘keeper joined York in 2021 from Mansfield and was given a contract extension in 2023, suggesting he is part of the club’s long-term plans.
Although, Hinshelwood might rely on George Sykes-Kenworthy for York’s final three matches of the season. Sykes-Kenworthy has been a regular between the sticks for the Yorkshire outfit this season, making 22 appearances, perhaps indicating that Campbell will return as a backup.
