Leeds United Could Be Set To Lose Several Key Players

Leeds United could lose several key players during the summer transfer window if the side fail to earn promotion back to the Premier League, whether that be through the play-offs or via automatic promotion.

Prior to his arrival at Elland Road, Daniel Farke had proven himself an astute tactician in the Championship, having guided Norwich City to two promotions during his time at Carrow Road. The German coach has once again showcased that he is a master of the division by guiding his team to a title race so late in the campaign.

Following a ropey start to the season, the Yorkshire outfit are firmly favourites to lift the crown in May, even if Ipswich Town are top of the table at the moment. Furthermore, Leeds United are on a 15-game unbeaten streak in the league, the club’s longest run without defeat since Howard Wilkinson’s title-winning side in 1991/92.

Farke has been on the receiving end of criticism in the past, particularly when his Norwich team struggled in the Premier League twice, surrounding his inability to shore up a defence given the Canaries leaked goals in the top-flight. However, this term, Leeds boast the best defensive record in the Championship and only the fourth-best attack.

The Whites’ forward line has been carried by their front four for large parts of the season. Crysencio Summerville, in particular, is having an incredible individual campaign, having scored 18 goals and recorded nine assists in all competitions, while Daniel James is on 21 goal contributions for the season – a career-high figure for the Welshman.

Due to the excellent goalscoring form of the wide players and Joel Piroe, striker Georginio Rutter hasn’t needed to be as prolific this term and has primarily been the link man for the attack. As a result, the Frenchman has registered 15 assists in the Championship. Only Ipswich’s Leif Davis has more in the entire league.

Nevertheless, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast this week, journalist Pete O’Rourke believes Leeds could struggle to keep hold of any of their key attacking talent if the club fail to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking [quotes via Caught Offside]:

“If Leeds do miss out on promotion, there will be interest in Rutter and other top players at the club. The likes of Gnonto and Summerville will also be wanted elsewhere if that is the case.”

Writer’s View

This was always going to be an issue for Leeds United this season after relegation last term. Parachute payments are greatly reduced in the second campaign after being relegated, meaning there is less of a cash windfall.

However, the club have expertly set themselves up to have a great chance of bouncing back up by appointing a promotion expert and giving him the tools he needs to succeed. Even if the Whites somehow don’t finish in the automatic promotion places, they will certainly be the favourites in the play-offs.
