Portsmouth Boss Reveals Severity Of Forward’s Injury

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has given a positive update regarding the injury suffered by Christian Saydee in their 1-0 victory over Peterborough United on Saturday.

It was a huge three points for Pompey, who further stamp their authority at the top of the table. Although their gap to Derby County stays at five points, there’s now a nine point gap between them and Bolton Wanderers in third. Automatic promotion looks just around the corner for John Mousinho’s side who are now unbeaten in their last 12 league matches.

Given Peterborough occupy fourth currently, it was a huge three points for the South-Coast side, who put in a great performance away from home. It wasn’t all cheery though, with worries over an injury suffered by forward Christian Saydee.

The 21-year-old would be forced off in the 32nd minute after going down holding his hamstring. Given it is an injury that he has previously suffered from it was certainly a worry, especially as he was brought off instantly. He would be replaced by Kusini Yengi, who scored the winner but nonetheless it was still something that both fans and coaching staff would’ve though about after the game.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has however revealed that the injury suffered by the attacker is not significant, or at least not as significant as potentially first thought. With one of the longest injury lists in the league currently, the squad is continuing to grind out results but they are rather depleted from a depth standpoint at the minute.

Speaking to The News, Mousinho provided a positive update on Saydee’s injury.

“Christian felt his hamstring. It’s the same injury he had previously, when he came off against Cambridge away from home. It’s a neural injury, so it’s not a hamstring tear but feels like a tear.

So hopefully it won’t keep him out for more than two weeks, but it’s obviously something he has to get on top of. It’s one of those annoying ones for Christian, but first of all we had to make sure we protected him so it didn’t turn into anything worse.

He felt it during the game, so we wanted to make sure we had players out there who were at full tilt and ready to go.”

Despite his numbers this season being by no means prolific, Saydee has been an important part of the Portsmouth attack. He provides depth in the attacking areas and is versatile enough to also cover in midfield if need be. He doesn’t grab the headlines like Colby Bishop or Kusini Yengi do, but he still has his place in the attack and it is a bit of a loss for Mousinho.

That being said, it is fortunately only a short term injury and Saydee will still play a part in the run-in to the end of the season. Still only 21, he’ll be expected to progress next season and if able to stay injury free, could become quite an asset in years to come. It is another name to add to the long injury list that Portsmouth do currently have but you couldn’t tell that with how they’re playing at the minute and they look destined to be playing in the second tier next season.
