Newport County‘s Kyle Jameson was delighted with his team’s performance as they edge ever closer to the League Two playoff places.
The Welsh club beat fellow challengers AFC Wimbledon 2-0 through Bryn Morris and Jameson in each half, putting them two points behind The Dons who occupy the last top 7 spot.
Speaking to the media following the win at Plough Lane, the defender was delighted with The Exiles’ performance. He said [Quotes via the South Wales Argus]:
“It was massive, I think it was a statement win for us going away from home at a tough place to go.
“[Promotion] is an aim for every player and team in this division. We just take it game by game, ticking off week by week.
“We are in and around it [the play-offs] but we don’t really keep an eye on it; we work hard in training and everyone in that changing room wants to win.
“Nothing has been achieved yet, we only look at the next game and that is Barrow. We will work hard all week to try and get three points up there.”
Occupying 11th place, County travel to Holker Street on Saturday before playing Colchester United and Crawley Town across the Easter weekend.
But a mounting injury list and international call-ups mean there will be some disruption to Graham Coughlan’s team sheets.
Newport are missing three key defenders in Shane McLoughlin, Ryan Delaney and James Clarke, who have all played in a minimum of 25 league games this season.
Jameson commented on his individual performance in London, adding: “I don’t think that we have kept as many clean sheets as we’d have liked throughout the season but kept one against an opposition who hadn’t conceded in four. It was massive,” said Jameson.
“It’s always nice to chip in with a goal. To give us a bit of breathing room at 2-0 up was a good feeling.”
The 25-year-old opened his account for the club with his finish in the second half and scored his first goal since playing for Oldham Athletic in 2020/21.

As Kyle Jameson said, it was a statement win for Newport in their push up the table. Whilst they have lost two of their last five, they both came against Mansfield Town and Stockport County in 1-0 losses. The fixture list is fairly kind for County compared to their competitors, so there is a decent chance with the form they are in to capture a top seven spot.
Beating Barrow will be another season-defining result. Three points put them within touching distance of the playoffs and will drag The Bluebirds into the fight, perhaps opening a second spot up for the taking. Like Wimbledon, Pete Wild’s side are defensively strong, so Newport County will need to find a way to crack that to claim a win in Lancashire.
