Pundit Issues Interesting Leeds United Prediction

Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison believes Leeds United will prove successful in their bid to secure automatic promotion from the Championship this season.

The Whites have been in electric form as of late, with Saturday’s shock 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town halting their nine game winning streak. With league leaders Leicester City faltering in recent weeks, this allowed Daniel Farke’s team to close the gap at the top of the table, culminating in their stunning 3-1 comeback win against the Foxes at the end of last month.

Unfortunately for the Yorkshire outfit, Ipswich Town have kept up the pace. A 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at the weekend saw Kieran McKenna’s team move into the final automatic promotion spot in second, where they now sit just three points behind Leicester.

There are just 11 games remaining until we learn who will be plying their trade in the Premier League next season. Leeds will hope to return to winning ways on Tuesday night when they host struggling Stoke City, whilst the Tractor Boys welcome Bristol City to Portman Road. Meanwhile, Leicester face a tough task when they travel to the Stadium of Light to tackle an out-of-form Sunderland.

Despite that, Morrison still believes that Enzo Maresca will guide the East Midlands outfit to the title, leaving a three-way battle for that final automatic promotion spot. Speaking on Sky Sports News, via Leeds United Newsthe former Birmingham City striker said:

“We have (a title race), but I still think Leicester will win the title. I know that they have had a few bad results, but I still think they are good enough. There was that gap. You always get a team in the Championship, they have that sticky spell, and that’s what Leicester have had recently. I think they will kick on now.

“I think they will win it, and I think Leeds will finish second. I think they will be those (two). Ipswich, McKenna, has done a fantastic job. All they can do is keep on winning, but if you are look at the Leeds squad, the likes of Summerville, Gnonto, Piroe, Rutter, and even Bamford starting today (Saturday) and Piroe on the bench, and then they can bring them on, Archie Gray, they have got a fantastic squad, so I think Leeds will just do it.

“If you had asked me a month ago, I would have said Southampton, but, as I said, this is what the Championship is like. It is really tight.”

Writer’s View

Although they didn’t lose at the weekend, drawing with a team towards the bottom of the table in Huddersfield would’ve felt like a defeat, especially given their recent form. However, they are still in a strong position and are still to lose a league game in 2024.

Ipswich appear to be the team that just won’t go away, but it is fair to say that Leeds have the superior squad and that could be enough to see them over the line come May. Whatever happens though, it is sure to be an exciting end to the campaign.
