Cambridge United Chief Drops Major Managerial Update

Cambridge United interim head coach Barry Corr has stated that the club could appoint a new manager by today, having dropped to 19th in the League One table following recent results.

The U’s last won a game in mid-February during an emphatic 4-0 victory at Brunton Park against bottom-of-the-table Carlisle United. Since then, the side have lost four games from four in England’s third tier and now sit merely four points above the relegation zone.

Three of these defeats have come under caretaker manager Corr who took over from Neil Harris after the latter surprisingly left his post at the Abbey Stadium to return to Millwall as Joe Edwards’ successor. So far, the Lions have managed two wins from two under the 46-year-old to stay one point clear of the relegation zone in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Cambridge United have swung in the opposite direction. Harris’ final game in charge of the side was a 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers. Interim boss Corr certainly got handed the short end of the stick as he was tasked with coaching the team against promotion hopefuls Peterborough United, Stevenage and Bolton once more.

Cambridge’s run of games don’t get much easier either, with a visit from Northampton Town on Saturday followed by a trip to an in-form Lincoln City merely three days later. Nevertheless, the club are expected to have a new man in the dugout very soon.

In fact, speaking after the 2-0 loss to Bolton at the weekend to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Corr revealed that the club could have a new manager today [quotes via Cambridge Independent]:

“They need stability, they need to know that this is the man in charge and he’s here for long-term – that will definitely help the players,” he said.

“I would imagine it will be from Monday and he’ll have a full training week to get ideas into the players, which will help as well. We can start from there.”

It will be interesting to see who Cambridge United get through the doors to be Harris’ permanent successor. However, there may not be too many keen candidates given the unappealing circumstances the U’s find themselves in so late in the campaign.

Nonetheless, Corr has done his best. The team were plunged into uncertainty after Harris’ departure and faced three incredibly difficult teams, narrowly losing to two of them. Hopefully, the pressure will be eased off his shoulders very soon, with an announcement likely to be made over the coming days.
