Former Derby County Star Linked With Sensational EFL Return

Former Derby County and Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison is reportedly on the shortlists of several EFL clubs as they look to bolster their squads for the run-in.

Morrison is currently without a club after he was surprisingly axed from his former teammate Wayne Rooney’s 2023 MLS squad while at DC United. He played 14 times in the US capital but did not set the league alight with just two goals during his spell in the States.

Now, as revealed by TeamTalk, he could be set for a return to England with League One promotion hopefuls Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers among those interested in his services. Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday are also keeping tabs on the 31-year-old.

Morrison most recently played in the EFL for Derby County during the 2021/22 campaign as the Rams were relegated to the third tier following a 21-point deduction. He made 36 appearances and scored four times so certainly proved he can still be useful at this level.

Sheffield Wednesday have had a small resurgence following a positive January window, picking up wins over Birmingham City and Millwall either side of a defeat to Leicester City. Danny Röhl will be hoping Morrison could add that extra bit of quality they need to claw back the four points they currently sit from safety.

However, with game time likely to be a priority for the Jamaica international, he might prefer a League One move and hope to return to the Championship following a promotion party in May.

Bolton Wanderers are still serious League One title contenders and are unbeaten in their last seven, sitting just three points outside the automatic promotion spots with two games in hand on Derby County. The Trotters have plenty of quality in midfield, but Ian Evatt might see Morrison as the final piece of the puzzle to secure promotion from this level at the third time of asking in his tenure.

As for Peterborough United, the wheels seem to be rapidly falling off for their promotion hopes following four straight defeats that have seen them drop to fifth, dragging Posh more into the playoff race than the battle for the automatic spots.

Darren Ferguson, son of one of Morrison’s former bosses Sir Alex Ferguson, may want an injection of something new into his squad to spark the revival they need to ensure their season does not dwindle into nothingness.

Writer’s View

Ravel Morrison was once touted to be a future Premier League legend but a whole host of issues has meant the dream trajectory for his career never panned out. However, there is still undoubted talent in the midfielder and at just 31, a move back to the EFL could be the kickstart he needs to prove he still has plenty to offer the beautiful game.

Having not played for the best part of a year, he could well be rusty, making his signature a risky one for any club that picks him up. Although if someone can fashion the perfect circumstances and somehow find the very best of Morrison, they’ll have a real quality player to get them over the line come the final day.
