Peterborough United star Kwame Poku has revealed that he is set for a return to action this weekend as the struggling side face Blackpool, hoping to end a three-game losing streak in League One.
Up until February, the Posh were locked in a tense battle at the top of the table with Portsmouth, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers but three consecutive defeats to Wigan Athletic, Exeter City and Wycombe Wanderers have now left the club 13 points behind first place, albeit with two games in hand on Pompey.
Darren Ferguson was dealt a massive blow in mid-January in a game away at Charlton Athletic when star attacker Kwame Poku went up for a header and landed on his ankle, forcing the Ghana international to limp off in the 67th minute.
The injury was worse than initially feared and Poku has been out of the team ever since. However, the 22-year-old was set to be back in action for Peterborough United on Tuesday night at the Weston Homes Stadium against Port Vale, but the game was postponed after heavy rainfall throughout the day.
Nevertheless, speaking to club media head of his return this weekend, Poku believes that the midweek postponement may have worked in his favour, giving him an extra few days to get back up to scratch [quotes via the Peterborough Telegraph]:
“It’s important I had a full week to train before getting back into it. Now I’ve got the confidence I’m really ready to go on Saturday,” Poku said.
“I don’t normally go up for headers like that but I did and landed badly on my ankle, it’s just unfortunate. I tried to play on as I was unsure what I’d done and we were drawing at the time, so I wanted to get that goal and was happy we got it when I was off. I wanted to give myself every opportunity to carry on.
Kwame Poku spoke to Posh+ after recovering from injury and is looking forward to making an impact between now and the end of the season.#pufc

“We were in a good place then and now just need to get back to winning ways.”

Ferguson’s wingback experiment last Saturday was a disaster as Peterborough United were easily picked apart by Wycombe on a number of occasions, particularly when playing out from the back.
However, Poku’s return for the Posh is huge. The winger has scored eight goals and registered seven assists in all competitions this term, proving himself to be one of Ferguson’s most important players. His reintegration into the team will allow the manager to revert to his favoured 4-2-3-1 as well.
