Sunderland Dealt Blow As Target Set To Join Promotion Rivals

Sunderland are set to miss out on a key winter target as West Bromwich Albion are reportedly closing in on the signing of free agent Yann M’Vila, according to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna.

The journalist has revealed that the Baggies are in ‘advanced negotiations’ to sign the French midfielder, but only on a four-month deal, meaning M’Vila’s contract will expire at the end of the current campaign.

However, Foot Mercato revealed back in January that Sunderland were keen to bring the 33-year-old back to the Stadium of Light, having first registered interest in M’Vila last summer but resumed talks with his representatives a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, the move never came to fruition.

The experienced midfielder has been a free agent since July as Greek Super League giants Olympiacos allowed his contract to expire but now looks close to signing for West Brom, who failed to strengthen their midfield department before the winter market slammed shut over a week ago.

M’Vila has experience playing in England based on his time on Wearside. The former France international spent one season with the Black Cats under Dick Advocaat and later Sam Allardyce, making 40 appearances in all competitions. Speaking in an interview back in December, M’Vila admitted that the only second-tier team he would return to is Sunderland [quotes via Sunderland Nation]:

“I don’t need the money. I want to play. With all the respect I have for Ligue 2, I don’t see myself playing in this championship.

“There is only one club for which I would have agreed to return to the lower division for, it is Sunderland, to help them return to the Premier League. I had an extraordinary year there.”

Signing for West Brom would be a direct contradiction to his comments from back in December, saying that he would only return to Sunderland. However, joining the Baggies does make sense if Michael Beale isn’t keen to add a 33-year-old to his squad.

This could be an excellent acquisition for Carlos Corberan’s side. The Midlands club have been very inconsistent in recent weeks and M’Vila would add depth and quality to their core which will be instrumental ahead of a difficult fixture list. That is, of course, if the rumour is true.
