Blackburn Rovers Set To Make Managerial Decision

Blackburn Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is set to leave the club, according to a report from Craig Hope of the Daily Mail.

The former Danish international is set to leave his post at the club, after spending 90 games in charge, averaging a 46% win percentage throughout his period in Lancashire.

This news comes after Tomasson declared to BBC Sport last week that his side were in a very precarious situation, picking up just two points from their last eight games.

“It’s a very serious situation, but nothing has changed, it was also very serious in the summer when suddenly there was a hand grenade that changed everything with the cutting of the budget.”

The Danish manager revealed that he offered to leave last summer, as he felt the project was heading in a different direction than the one he initially signed up for.

Blackburn sit 18th in the Championship table, five points above QPR in the relegation zone, but Tomasson’s goals this season were not to just stay in the division.

“That’s probably why Steve Waggott (Chief Executive) said first and foremost this season is to stay in the league. I’m a little more ambitious.”

It was decided on Friday that the manager was not to speak to the media in his press conference. Rovers find themselves in somewhat of a tricky spot currently having sanctioned the sale of star man Adam Wharton to Crystal Palace for a club record £18 million, yet not really strengthening with those added funds.

Tomasson joined the club in the summer of 2022, with his last stint as a manager before taking the job at Ewood Park coming at Swedish side Malmo. He also spent four years as the assistant manager of the Denmark national team prior to that. It now looks highly unlikely that the Dane will see out his contract until the summer of 2025 with a decision expected to be made in the coming days.

Rovers’ next game is against Stoke City at home on Saturday, before a trip to face Birmingham City on Tuesday, one win from the two is a necessity if they want to further distance the gap to the relegation zone.

Tomasson is unhappy with the situation behind the scenes at the club and once the relationship between the ownership and the manager is broken, the best course of action is usually to part ways. The Dane will feel Blackburn should be a club pushing towards the play-off places, and that is a desire the owners can’t seem to match at present.

Addressing the managerial issue will be the next port of call for the Rovers board, who must bring in the right name if the club want to keep their spot in the Championship. After a shocking run of results, they could well slip further into the relegation fight, something which few fans would’ve predicted at the start of the season.
