National League Youngster Set To Join Fleetwood Town

On-loan Barnet defender Finley Potter is in advanced talks to join League One Side Fleetwood Town from Sheffield United on a permanent deal, with the Blades being prepared to cancel the youngster’s loan to facilitate the move, as per Pete O’Rourke.

Potter came through the Sheffield United youth academy before joining National League playoff chasers Barnet on loan at the end of last season amidst a defensive injury crisis for the Bees.

The then 18-year-old made 16 appearances for the Bees in all competitions, chipping in with three goals as Dean Brennan’s side reached the National League playoffs as well as the FA Trophy semi-final.

The left-footed defender was so impressive during his time at The Hive that Barnet opted to sign him on another loan, this time for the full season, during the summer.

This season, Potter has made 22 appearances for the Bees in all competitions as he has largely been in competition with veteran defender Jerome Okimo to start on the left-hand-side of a back three.

Dean Brennan’s Barnet side currently sit in third place in the National League table, albeit with a game in hand over second-placed Bromley, and are looking to go one better in both the league and the FA Trophy this year in order to give their fans their first visit to Wembley in decades.

In stark contrast though, Fleetwood are staring down the barrel of relegation from League One. They are currently rooted to the foot of the table and are 11 points from safety having not recorded a victory since November.

Writer’s View

Although the fan opinion on Potter may have slightly diminished over the course of his second spell in North London, he is still a player who has the potential to make it to the very top and therefore could be a very shrewd purchase by Fleetwood.

It is clear that, in order to perform best, he needs a regular space in the team. If the Fishermen give him that opportunity, there is nothing stopping him from being a key part of a successful battle against relegation despite his age.
