Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence has stated that he wants a couple more names through the door prior to the transfer window shutting next Thursday, though that is harder than some may think.
Having made their first signing of the window in the form of Swindon full-back Remeao Hutton last week, the ball is now rolling and it doesn’t seem as if the defender will be the last.
Hutton was put straight into the starting 11 for Gillingham’s clash with Forest Green Rovers last Saturday, and would play all of the 90 minutes. It was however a disappointing result for Clemence’s side as they’d only manage a draw with the relegation-threatened side.
Although they may have stayed in eighth in the table, a win would’ve seen them go into the play-off positions with Notts County also drawing. Now on a four match unbeaten run, Clemence will be hoping that his side can continue to build on recent form.
It is somewhat surprising that the club haven’t yet signed a striker this window given that they have scored a league-low 24 goals. However it seems as if that is a position that will likely be addressed prior to the window shutting next Thursday.
Speaking to Kent Online, Clemence outlined his transfer plans.
“I always felt that when I came to the club I was going to get backed in January and they (the owners and recruitment department) have been fantastic. They have delivered on that and that is all you can hope for for someone in my position.
“I am hoping it’s not the end of it, I am hoping we can get some more players over the line, but we will have to see. I can’t promise we will do that.”
“The transfer window is still open and I know the recruitment team are working hard, the owners are working hard, we will still try and be active if we can be but, as I have said a few times, it is not always easy to get players during January.”
“We are open for business until the end of the month, like every other club in the Football League. If there are players available that we are interested in then of course we will go after them.”

Sat just a singular point off of the play-off places, Gillingham are more than in the fight for promotion this season. Their form in front of goal is a worry though and with the worse goal difference in the top 19 teams in the league, they’ll struggle to hold down a spot in the play-offs if goal difference does become a factor.
It is a paramount that they bring in a proven goalscorer this January as that may just be the final piece of the puzzle, one that has been missing all season.
