Rotherham United Eyeing Move For League One Striker

Rotherham United are eyeing a move for Wigan Athletic forward Callum Lang, according to Darren Witcoop of the Sunday Mirror.

The South Yorkshire side are 24th in the Championship and are looking for a spark in the second half of the season. Lang is the subject of interest from several clubs within this window.

The Millers’ boss Leam Richardson spent time at Wigan in the past and is very keen on bringing the 25-year-old into the club. Rotherham were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City yesterday, and have won just one of their last five games.

The former Morecambe loanee has featured 23 times this season for Wigan in League One, scoring two goals and delivering two assists in that period. The English forward has been at Wigan since 2016 but has only managed to score once in his previous 36 appearances in the Championship.

Lang was left out of the Wigan squad to face Northampton Town this weekend, with manager Shaun Maloney stating the Liverpool-born forward had calf issues.

Football Insider recently reported that both Derby and Portsmouth were readying offers for Lang, with the Latics open to allowing him to leave the club within this window. Wigan needs to raise funds due to recent financial difficulties and may be ready to cash in on the attacker to try and help the situation.

The player’s preference is yet to be stated. Rotherham face a battle to stay in the Championship this season, while Pompey and the Rams have an opportunity to be promoted from League One into the division above. John Mousinho’s side currently sits top of the table, with Paul Warne’s side fourth.

Rotherham are yet to make an official offer for the player, but the strong interest suggests a formal approach is not far away.

Writer’s View

Lang is a talented forward who Wigan will be sad to see go. Financial issues at the club mean they may have to lose the former Liverpool academy player, and he will add great value to any of the sides that do sign him.

Rotherham are unlikely to stay up in the Championship this season, and he may feel a move to Portsmouth and the chance of promotion is the most enticing offer at this moment in time. Derby will also feel they have an opportunity to land him, but if all three clubs make an offer the final decision may fall with the player.
