Blackburn Rovers Set Asking Price For Key Star

Blackburn Rovers have set an asking price of between £10-15 million for midfielder Adam Wharton amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur, according to Football Insider

The 19-year-old has attracted attention over the course of the past year, emerging as one of the hottest talents in the Championship. After making his debut for the Lancashire club in 2022, the youngster finished the 2022/23 campaign by starting Rovers’ last five league matches, but has been an ever-present so far this season.

Although he was already under contract at Ewood Park until 2027, Wharton penned fresh terms last month, signing a new five-year deal which will expire in 2028. It was a smart move from the 1995 Premier League champions, with the player considered one of their prized assets.

Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers were amongst the teams to consider a move last summer and it was previously reported that the Magpies were set to test the waters once the transfer window opened this month. However, it is another Premier League club who now appear to have upped their interest.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are big admirers of the England under-20 international and have regularly deployed scouts to watch him in action. Ange Postecoglou’s side could make an offer this month, whilst Crystal Palace and Everton are also keeping tabs on the situation.

However, it is claimed that Blackburn will resist any offers this month, although accept that it will be a different scenario in the summer. As a result, a bid of between £10-15 million would be difficult to reject.

Wharton has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season. However, Blackburn have recently slipped to 17th in the table following a run of four defeats and a draw. The New Year’s Day draw with basement club Rotherham United will feel like a missed opportunity, although they did record a 5-2 win over Cambridge United in the FA Cup last weekend.

Blackburn’s decision to hand Adam Wharton a new deal last month will be no coincidence. He had already penned a fresh contract the year before which ran until 2027, although the extension is likely to include a number of clauses which could benefit the club when it comes to any transfer negotiations in the summer.

Despite just one year of senior football under his belt, the teenager is a player who is considered capable of playing regularly in the Premier League and this season is likely to be his last at Ewood Park.
