Peterborough United Chairman Makes January Transfer Window Admission

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has publicly issued an update on the side’s potential January transfer window activity following an impressive win at Pride Park.

The Posh faced off against Derby County in a huge clash in League One to kick off 2024 and managed to come away with all three points to move into third place above the Rams, although the Cambridgeshire club have played an extra match.

Darren Ferguson’s men took the lead just once during the five-goal thriller against Paul Warne’s side but made it count when Ricky-Jade Jones bagged in the fourth minute of stoppage time to take all three points back to London Road.

This was the second time in a week that Peterborough had battled back from behind, having gone 2-0 down against Barnsley on Friday to earn a point. Nevertheless, today’s victory was huge for the side to keep up the dream of gaining automatic promotion back to the Championship.

However, supporters shouldn’t expect the Posh to strengthen during the transfer window as chairman Darragh MacAnthony has admitted that there will be no first-team additions over the coming weeks, although the 47-year-old did reveal that some players could be signed for the U21s.

When asked on X, formerly known as Twitter, about whether fans should expect any incomings, MacAnthony said:

“Nope. Maybe a Couple gems for 21’s who will be ready for first team squad in summer”

It is also yet to be seen whether or not Peterborough United will look to sell Jonson Clarke-Harris this winter. It was reported at the weekend that League Two outfit Wrexham are hoping to acquire his services in the next few weeks but the Posh are said to have rejected bids for the player.

Writer’s View

It could be a case of Peterborough United not wanting to sign any players unless certain stars are sold this month. While Posh fans will want the chairman to do everything in his power to ensure that the side are strong enough to achieve promotion, MacAnthony has always run the club sensibly and won’t splash money when it isn’t necessary.

Furthermore, Peterborough have a solid squad right now. Unless they lose players such as Kwame Poku or Ronnie Edwards, this group of players are good enough to clinch promotion ahead of Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth.
