£1 Million Former Derby County Star Could Join League One Rivals In January

Following a recent blip in form, it has been reported that League One leaders Portsmouth have enquired about the availability of Ipswich Town star George Edmundson ahead of the January transfer window.

Pompey are still four points clear at the top of England’s third tier but are winless in their last two league outings, having drawn at Fratton Park to relegation battlers Fleetwood Town before losing their first away game of the campaign to Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day.

Portsmouth’s defeat on Tuesday was eased by second-place Peterborough United surprisingly dropping points at home to Reading at the same time but head coach John Mousinho is keen to add depth and quality to his squad when the winter window opens to avoid dropping into the dreaded playoff spots.

According to BBC journalist Chris Wise, Pompey are looking to sign Ipswich Town defender Edmundson in January and have asked the Premier League promotion hopefuls about his availability over the coming weeks, having fallen out of favour at Portman Road.

Having signed for Ipswich at the beginning of the 2021/22 season for £1 million, the former Derby County loanee went on to make 59 appearances across his first two campaigns with the club, helping the side to get promoted last term from League One.

However, Edmundson has since dropped down Kieran McKenna’s pecking order, making just five appearances in all competitions for Ipswich this season, including only two in the league and now could be on his way to Portsmouth, should the Championship outfit let him leave in January.

This would be a fantastic signing for Portsmouth. Edmundson is a Championship-quality defender and would be superb at the back for Pompey should this deal come to fruition, although it’s unclear whether this deal would be a permanent signing or a loan.

Considering the ex-Rangers centre-half still has eighteen months remaining on his current deal, Ipswich may ask for a fee that Portsmouth are unwilling to pay so a loan could be the right move for the league leaders.
