Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney is keen to sign Liverpool star Kaide Gordon on loan in January as the Blues look to bolster their first-team squad, according to reports.
TeamTalk are claiming that Gordon has become a top target, with the January transfer window now less than two weeks away, as Rooney looks to improve his squad’s depth ahead of the second half of the campaign.
The Birmingham head coach handed the youngster his senior debut during the pair’s time together at Derby County until Liverpool eventually acquired his services for merely £1 million, with the figure set to rise to £3 million over time with add-ons.
Gordon has been a player for the Reds’ U23s since leaving Derby but has struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team, although the teenage sensation did make his first European start last Thursday in a 2-1 away defeat against Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.
The 19-year-old played 75 minutes during the game before being replaced late in the second half. This was his fifth appearance for Liverpool overall but his first since the 2021/22 season.
Gordon has now featured more times for Liverpool than he did at Pride Park but could be set for a loan move to St. Andrew’s when the winter transfer window opens, with Rooney looking to reunite with the winger.
Birmingham City have had a difficult start to life under the guidance of Rooney since he arrived in the Midlands. The club have picked up merely two victories across his eleven matches in charge and are also the seventh-lowest scorers in England’s second tier. Gordon could potentially help alleviate the side’s goalscoring woes this term.
Writer’s View
Gordon is a top talent and a move to Birmingham City may be beneficial for his development given his lack of game-time at Anfield. For young players, experience in men’s football far outweighs any minutes in the academy leagues.
It may be a risk to bring Gordon to Birmingham given his lack of experience in such a gruelling division. However, it could also be an advantageous move for all parties should Liverpool agree to let him leave as he will certainly see regular action under his former manager.
