Charlton Athletic winger Corey Blackett-Taylor is a potential target for Derby County in January, as reported by journalist Darren Witcoop on Twitter (X).
Blackett-Taylor has been in a rich vein of form this season thus far, providing seven goals and a further seven assists in Charlton’s first 20 games in League One.
Those contributions, have greatly helped the League One top scorer Alfie May score 15 goals this season, with Blackett-Taylor instrumental in the build-up of many.
It can be deemed as a real breakout season for the winger, who although had a productive season last year, with 11 goal contributions, has taken his performances to a new level this year. It has been almost impossible for manager Michael Appleton to drop the 26-year-old and that has very much been the case, with Blackett-Taylor starting all 20 League One games so far.
Those performances have hardly gone unnoticed, and the Addicks player is the subject of interest of plenty of EFL clubs.
It has emerged that fellow League One side Derby County are one club that are interested in the former Aston Villa player and could explore options to buy in January.
The Rams currently sit in 6th in the league, nine points and four places above Charlton in 10th. With more realistic ambitions of promotion to the Championship than that of the Addicks, it could be a move that would interest Blackett-Taylor, that being said it would be a move that would come at a significant cost in January.
Given that his contract expires in the summer, Derby may choose to wait due to the cost however it would come as no surprise to see the winger offered an extension at his current club. It would be a risky option for the Rams to wait until the summer as they will no doubt be having to fight with Championship clubs with higher budgets to sign the 26-year-old.
That is however a problem they may already face, with a plethora of Championship clubs also watching Blackett-Taylor currently. A move to the Championship rather than a League One rival seems far more realistic at the minute, especially given the performances that he has put in so far this season.
It will be a nervy January window for Charlton, as they could lose one of their stars, they’ll certainly be looking at re-structuring the winger’s contract in order to get him to extend his stay at the Valley. That is easier said than done though, and if big money is put on the table by a Championship club in January, they may be forced to sell.
Writer’s View
Blackett-Taylor has been one of the most exciting players to watch in the first half of the season, and deserves plenty of plaudits for the consistent, high-level performances that he has put in. It comes as no surprise that there is plenty of interest in him as a result.
Derby however don’t seem to be the likeliest option and there are serious doubts as to whether Charlton would want to sell to a League One rival. A move to the Championship seems likelier both from the club as well as Blackett-Taylor’s point of view, and he could take his current form to new levels.
