Southampton Could Lose £12 Million Star To Premier League Side

With the January transfer window set to open in two weeks, promotion hopefuls Southampton could lose star forward Che Adams to a struggling Premier League side, according to reports.

A disastrous four-game losing streak near the start of the campaign has cost the Saints dearly in the race for automatic promotion but Russell Martin’s side are the in-form team in the Championship, having not lost a game since the 23rd of September.

Southampton are now 14 matches unbeaten in the league and are level on points with third-place Leeds United, despite having an inferior goal difference. Furthermore, the South Coast club are sitting in fourth, ten points behind second-place Ipswich Town.

Additionally, only Ipswich, Leicester City and Norwich City have scored more goals than the Saints this season. Southampton’s star attacker Adam Armstrong is the second-top goalscorer in the Championship this campaign too, having scored 12 goals and recorded six assists in 22 games, but no player has registered more goal contributions than Armstrong.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers striker has struck up a solid partnership with Che Adams in the forward line. The duo are one of the most productive partnerships in the EFL this season, as was revealed by The Real EFL, having contributed to 65% of Southampton’s goals so far.

However, this prolific partnership could be broken up this winter. According to TeamTalk, Premier League strugglers Burnley are keen to bring Adams to Turf Moor in an attempt to avoid the drop at the first time of asking.

No player has scored more than three goals in all competitions for the Clarets, while Adams has found the net four times in total.

The Scotland international’s contract expires at the end of the season and Southampton may be forced to accept a cut price for his services or potentially lose him for nothing in the summer.

During the recent transfer window, Everton submitted a £12 million offer for the forward but no deal ever came to fruition. Nevertheless, Southampton may be inclined to accept a bid over the coming weeks to avoid losing him for nothing at the end of his contract.

While Armstrong has been Southampton’s main man under Martin, Adams has played his part in the team’s success so far. Letting him leave for Burnley could hamper the team’s chances of earning promotion back to the top-flight.
