New Details Throw Doubt On MK Dons Player Departure

MK Dons midfielder Dawson Devoy may not be moving on this transfer window, as revealed by his brother on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move back to the League of Ireland, with a possible loan deal suggested by the Irish Independent. Manager Mike Williamson did little to dispel that notion in the MK Citizen today, saying he was “‘sure there’s truth in it all’ when quizzed.

Devoy, who has appeared 56 times for MK Dons since leaving Bohemians, has fallen out of favour under the new boss. He hasn’t appeared in League Two since October 28th and hasn’t started a game in the league since September 16th. He has appeared cup competitions recently, with 81 minutes of action against Reading in the FA Cup.

He’s also appeared twice in the EFL Trophy, providing a goal and an assist as his team beat Northampton 3-2 before being sent off as they slipped to a 4-0 defeat against Brighton Under 21s. That’s led to a suggestion he may return to the League of Ireland this winter, in time for their new season kicking off, but his brother, Haydn, has disputed that.

On the platform once known as Twitter, Haydn Devoy simply tweeted ‘not true’ to the report that Dawson could be returning to Ireland.

Devoy came through the youth ranks at Home Farm and later St Kevin’s Boys before joining Bohemians in 2018. He rose to the first team whilst with Bohs, appearing in the Europa Conference League, and was named the PFAI Young Player of the Year in 2021.

He joined MK Dons in July 2022 for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year deal. He has since appeared 56 times for Milton Keynes, 24 of those outings being EFL starts. He’s bagged twice for his current club but has struggled for game time under the new manager.

Writer’s View

Devoy is still an emerging young talent and a player with a decent future ahead of him. However, he needs to be playing games, so there’s no wonder that reports about a possible move away from Stadium MK have surfaced.

However, nobody is likely to be better placed than the player’s brother to refute those claims. Devoy certainly hasn’t been a flop at Milton Keynes, and there’s no reason why he would be pushing for a return to the League of Ireland.

That said, he may not want a move, and his brother may not think he’s going to get one, but if Mike Williamson does want a clearout, there are likely to be casualties. At present, Devoy looks less likely to be one of those casualties than his fellow Irishman, Darragh Burns.
