Championship outfit Watford are struggling to hold onto star attacker Matheus Martins this January as his parent club Udinese may look to recall him from his loan spell, according to reports.
Martins has had a solid campaign so far in what is his second loan spell at Vicarage Road. The Brazilian has been with the Hornets for practically an entire year now since arriving back in January.
The 20-year-old signed for Serie A club Udinese at the start of the year for a reported fee of around £6.2 million but was immediately sent out on loan to Watford in the Championship. His first stint with the Hornets didn’t go as planned, with the forward making merely six appearances last season, failing to score a single goal.
Nevertheless, Martins has been much more effective this time around. In 18 appearances in England’s second tier, the youngster has found the net four times and is currently averaging a goal once every 227 minutes in the Championship.
However, the ex-Fluminense star’s form has piqued the interest of Watford’s sister club Udinese who may look to recall the Brazil U20s international once the January transfer window opens, in what has been described as an “emergency by Mondo Udinese.
The Udine-based club have won just one game this season and are sitting merely one point above the relegation zone, having recently appointed the former Crawley Town manager Gabriele Cioffi to help save them from the drop.
Furthermore, Udinese have scored merely 12 goals in 15 appearances this season, having sold Beto to Everton in the summer, and so Martins is seen as a player who can help alleviate the team’s goalscoring woes.

Unfortunately for Watford, Udinese do hold the right to recall Matheus Martins from his loan spell should they see fit and considering the team’s woes this season, this could certainly happen over the coming weeks.
However, given how much football the Brazilian has been playing this season, the best option for him is to remain at Watford until the end of the campaign and potentially help the Hornets to get promoted back to the Premier League.
