Former Birmingham City manager John Eustace has received offers for a swift return to football after departing the West Midlands club in October, according to Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman.
The 44-year-old was dismissed by the Blues in extraordinary circumstances, fresh off the back of a 3-1 victory over city rivals West Bromwich Albion. It was a result which sent Birmingham up to sixth in the Championship in what was their best start to a campaign in years, but news across the pond appeared to seal his fate.
Whilst the celebrations of the derby win continued, Manchester United and England legend was announcing that he was to step down as manager of DC United following their failure to reach the MLS end-of-season play-offs. Three days later, the ex-striker was in the hotseat at St Andrew’s whilst Eustace was inexplicably cast aside.
Birmingham have faltered since, winning one of Rooney’s eight games in charge and have slipped down to 15th as a result. His predecessor continues to be linked to several roles, particularly with the number of second tier clubs opting to change their manager in recent months.
This week has seen Sunderland and Swansea City follow suit as Tony Mowbray and Michael Duff became the latest victims. The former Blues boss has been linked to both, just as he was at the likes of Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers and Rotherham United. It has now been revealed that offers have been received, but Eustace is biding his time before returning to the game.
Don Goodman, speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest EFL Betting, said: “I think he’ll be on the list of contenders, for sure (at Sunderland and Swansea).
“I was with John last Friday at a charity function and he’s had opportunities to go back in, but he has been waiting for the right one,” continued Goodman, whilst speaking to The Real EFL’s Kelan Sarson. “His stock still remains high.”
“When you watch the way Birmingham have slipped down the table, he wouldn’t want that because he’s a great guy and he’s got Birmingham City in his heart, but it only highlights what a great job he did.
“I’ve got no doubt he’ll be back soon. He’s just waiting for the right opportunity. Whether he gets that with a Sunderland or a Swansea for instance remains to be seen.”
Meanwhile, Rooney has the opportunity to pick up his second win as boss when his side travel the short distance to Coventry City tonight. Despite their lowly position, three points would temporarily move them to within four points of the play-off places.
