Lincoln City will give fans an early Christmas present, as confirmed on social media.
Following Tuesday night’s last-minute postponement, Lincoln City and Accrington Stanley have come together to show their sympathies and gratitude to both sets of fans by offering tickets for £1 and free coach travel Imps supporters for the rearranged fixture.
On Tuesday night, Stanley were set to host the Imps in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. After cancelling an earlier inspection, the pitch at the Wham Stadium was deemed frozen and thus unplayable at 19:46, one minute after the game was supposed to have kicked off.
Accrington’s Chairman, Andy Holt, was unsurprisingly frustrated with the decision as he took to X to pin the blame on the officials and stated both teams wanted to play. “Dreadful decision by Ref,” he wrote. “Calling it off at kick-off time. Ground can’t have got much worse than an hour and a half ago. Needs stopping this shambles. Fans need proper notice.”
The cancellation meant a long two-hour journey back to Lincolnshire for the Imps fans who travelled. This morning, however, the two clubs released an update to their fans. Firstly, it was outlined that the game would be replayed on Tuesday 12th December, 7 pm kick-off.
The clubs have also agreed on new ticket prices for the game, pricing them at only £1; a gesture that has already been well received by fans of both clubs. They have also stated that anyone who had any original tickets for the fixture, which were priced at £10, can get a full refund and repurchase a ticket at the new rate if they so choose.
Furthermore, Lincoln will also be providing free travel on the Official Supporters Coaches to all fans, regardless of whether they travelled for the postponed fixture or not.
Writer’s View:
This is a great example of two EFL clubs coming together in unfortunate circumstances to reward fans. It will come at great cost to both clubs, however, the agreement that they would share the financial burden of both the postponed fixture and the rearranged fixture is simply another sign of great cooperation by two of the EFL’s most fan-focused clubs.
They will now be hoping that as many fans as possible take them up on the offers, to ensure both sides have large support come next Tuesday.
