Former Arsenal striker John Hartson has tipped Celtic midfielder David Turnbull to get a big move to Leeds United in the near future after an excellent start to the season.
Turnbull joined the Scottish giants back in August 2020 when Neil Lennon was in charge for a fee reported to be in the region of £3 million, having played for Motherwell for three seasons prior.
The midfielder hit the ground running at Celtic Park and managed to score nine goals in 35 appearances in all competitions as Celtic suffered their first league disappointment in almost a decade by losing their crown to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.
However, after Ange Postecoglou took over the Hoops, the Scot’s form didn’t slow down as Turnbull managed to equal his tally from the 2020/21 campaign by finding the net nine times but in one fewer appearance.
This season, under Brendan Rodgers, the 24-year-old has been superb in front of goal again and has found the net seven times in the Scottish Premiership. Only Kyogo Furuhashi has scored more times for Celtic in all competitions.
In fact, no player has scored more goals in Scotland’s top-flight than Turnbull who is locked as the top scorer with teammate Matt O’Riley and Rangers duo James Tavernier and Abdallah Sima.
Ahead of the winter window, former Celtic frontman Hartson believes Turnbull would suit a club like Leeds United who are pushing for promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Speaking to Go Radio, the football pundit said [quotes via HITC]:
“I like David Turnbull. I have always said it, he is a goalscoring midfield player. He adds that 10-14 goals every year for you from midfield.
“I can see him going to a top Championship team, like a Leeds United.”

This would be an incredible signing for Leeds United given how good Turnbull has been this season. However, the midfielder excels in a more attacking role which is something that Daniel Farke simply may not be able to offer him.
Farke has primarily used a 4-2-3-1 this season, with Glen Kamara and Ethan Ampadu as the double-pivot while Joel Piroe operates as the number ’10’. Given how well each player has performed this season, the manager won’t want to upset the apple cart by adding unnecessary competition just yet.
