Former Portsmouth “Top Prospect” Linked With Premier League Move

Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has had an excellent season on the south coast under head coach Russell Martin, which has caught the eyes of one of the Premier League’s biggest sides.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have been keeping close tabs on the Irishman’s progress at the St. Mary’s Stadium, believing him to be a “top prospect” for the future and have been left “hugely impressed” by his ability.

The Saints have struggled defensively this season, conceding 27 goals in just 17 matches which is the worst defensive record from the first 18 teams in the Championship. Bazunu started in all 17 of these games.

Nevertheless, Bazunu’s form has still piqued the interest of Spurs who are looking to add competition to their goalkeeping department, having signed Guglielmo Vicario during the summer for £17.2 million.

The 21-year-old recently earned himself the Man of the Match award during the international break as the Republic of Ireland were defeated 1-0 away from home by The Netherlands, with the young shot-stopper making four key saves during the game.

Despite never making an appearance for Manchester City, Bazunu gained invaluable experience on loan, firstly at Rochdale, and then at Portsmouth. It was with the latter that former head coach Danny Crowley predicted that the youngster was “going to the top”.

Bazunu is not the only goalkeeper from Southampton being linked with a move away from the club this week as Football Insider also reported that Everton are hoping to sign Alex McCarthy in January to provide backup to England number ‘1’ Jordan Pickford.

Vicario has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season so it’s highly unlikely that head coach Ange Postecoglou will be looking to replace the Italian any time soon.

Bazunu is seen as one for the future at Spurs but will be left to act as a backup for Vicario. The Dublin-born keeper shouldn’t leave Southampton unless a side in the top-flight can genuinely offer him regular first-team football.
