Ace Striker Willing To Look Past Feud If Wrexham Come Calling

Prolific striker Billy Sharp is willing to let the past go if a certain Welsh club come calling and gives him a lifeline back into football.

It has been just under a year since Sharp had a rant about the club – and their owners – during his time at Sheffield United. The Blades came up against Wrexham in the fourth round of the FA Cup. His public spat led to some bitter feelings after the two teams went into a replay, and the then National League leaders were creating headlines.

Since then the forward was released by United in the summer and he took up a short contract with LA Galaxy in the MLS. His time there was well spent as he notched up a goal every other game in his twelve appearances. Now though, he is out of contract, and very much a free agent, with the LA club not offering him a new contract for next season.

Sharp Tongue

Sheffield United went on to win the high-profile replay 3-1, with Sharp getting one of the goals. That is when Sharp laid into his opponents in an expletive-laced interview. He accused the Red Dragons of being “disrespectful” with their comments before the game which amounted to them “thinking they were already through”.

This led to some friendly fire as Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said he was “disappointed” with Sharp. Now though, during an interview, and reported by Goal.com, Sharp has admitted that he would be open to talks to join the team he called out, saying he doesn’t hold any grudges.

The 37-year-old said. “Why not?. Wrexham are doing really well, fair play to them. I don’t hold grudges. If that were one of my better options, why not.”

Of course, this is subject to Wrexham even needing an extra striker. The club have just beaten Morecambe 6-0 with their top striker, Paul Mullin, grabbing a hattrick. The win put them into second place, and with the January window coming Sharp may still be on the outside looking in as far as Parkinson’s men are concerned.

Writer’s View

Billy Sharp still has something to offer, His public tirade against Wrexham, and how they approached the FA Cup game last season, may have been justified, but saying what he did in a public arena would not have done him any favours across the Welsh border. Therefore as much as it would be a good story, it would seem highly unlikely that Sharp will be playing alongside Mullin very soon. It’s a funny old game though…
