Sheffield Wednesday will be without the services of Josh Windass for the visit of Championship leaders Leicester City on Wednesday after the attacker picked up his fifth yellow card of the season this afternoon.
The 29-year-old hit 16 goals in all competitions last season and wrote himself into Owls’ folklore when his late extra time strike secured a 1-0 win over Barnsley in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium in May.
The Yorkshire side’s return to the Championship has been nothing short of a disaster so far and they remain rooted firmly to the bottom of the division with just one win in 17 games. This afternoon’s 2-1 defeat against Birmingham City now means they are 10 points adrift of safety and it looks as if a swift return to the third tier is on the cards.
It doesn’t get any easier this week and they will welcome table-toppers Leicester to Hillsborough on Wednesday night. However, as per Yorkshire Live, Windass will not be available. The attacker earned his fifth caution of the campaign in the first half against the Blues this afternoon when he went down in the first half, with referee Rebecca Welch deeming that he had dived.
Windass is yet to get off the mark this season, although Danny Rohl’s side have only scored eight league goals all season. Despite that, he is a player that is still a regular starter and his absence will be a major blow for the manager.
Meanwhile, Leicester recovered from back-to-back defeats this afternoon to record a 2-0 win over Watford at the King Power Stadium, with former England international Jamie Vardy bagging both of the goals.

Sheffield Wednesday will already be huge underdogs against the 2016 Premier League champions and the absence of Windass will not make their task any easier. Although he is goalless this season, he is still a presence up top and they will need to be at their absolute best to get anything out of the game.
You could be forgiven for thinking that the Owls will have already written this game off and instead focusing on next weekend’s home clash with Blackburn Rovers.
