Just three years ago, Senegalese forward Oumar Niasse was still employed by Premier League – Everton, however fast forward to present day and the 33-year-old has just signed for eighth tier, Macclesfield FC.
The year is 2016, and following an impressive start to the 2015/16 Russian Premier League campaign with Lokomotiv Moscow, a then 25-year-old Niasse, completes a £13.5 million move to Merseyside. However across a four-year stay, the former Hull City man would only feature 42 times.
After just half a season in England, Ronald Koeman who was The Toffee’s manager at the time, made it clear that the attacker was not in his plans, freezing him out of the squad. Eventual loan moves to both Hull City and Cardiff City would come to fruition, however Niasse was released by his parent club in 2020.
As a result, Huddersfield took a chance on the former top flight man, one which would not pay off. His time in Yorkshire was certainly a forgettable one as he failed to register a single appearance for The Terriers, following a groin injury sustained in a friendly.
The turn of the calendar, saw the journeyman drop down yet another division in hopes of relishing first team opportunities once again, this time with Burton Albion in League One. Despite only featuring 12 times for The Brewers, it was a more memorable cameo for Niasse who returned three goals.
Following yet another lengthy spell away from football, Morecambe announced the services of the 33-year-old in March 2023 in hopes the forwards firepower could increase their chances of survival. This would prove ineffective however, and The Shrimps were ultimately relegated, whilst releasing the nine-cap Senegal international.
Furthermore, according to a club statement released this afternoon, The Silkmen who ply their trade in Step 3 of Non-League, have announced they have agreed terms with the attacker, subject to league approval.
Speaking on the news, they added;
“Boasting a wealth of experience, Niasse will be able to share his expertise from making over 50 appearances at the highest level.”
“The former Senegalese International provides a real threat with his pace and power and adds real quality to Alex Bruce’s squad.”
“Everyone at Macclesfield FC would like to wish Oumar every success during his time at The Leasing.com Stadium.”

The demise of someone who was at the very top of their game in recent years is certainly a sad one, however there’s no disputing Niasse’s ability and talent at the top end of the pitch.
It can be considered the former Premier League man has lost his way, but at the age of 33 it’s important to just enjoy playing again without the added pressure of huge crowds and expectations from higher up the footballing pyramid. This move could work exceptionally for both parties, if the forward can apply himself correctly.
