Confusion Emerges Over Rotherham United Managerial Situation

Rotherham United have not sacked manager Matt Taylor, despite reports emerging earlier today that he had been axed, according to the Yorkshire Post.

The Millers currently sit in the relegation spots in the Championship, with yesterday’s 5-0 defeat against Watford keeping them four points from safety heading into the latest international break.

They have recorded just two wins all season, with the last coming in a 2-0 victory over fellow strugglers Coventry City on October 25th. However, they followed that four days later with a defeat in the Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday, a result which saw Danny Rohl’s side pick up their first three points of the campaign.

Two respectable draws against Queens Park Rangers and Ipswich Town followed, but yesterday’s hammering at Vicarage Road looked to be the final straw when the Daily Mail claimed this afternoon that an agreement had been struck between the 41-year-old and Rotherham for a parting of ways. To add to the confusion, the Yorkshire Post state that isn’t the case.

Instead, it has been reported that Taylor’s position is ‘under review’, although he still currently remains in charge of first team affairs. His future was addressed yesterday, with the gaffer asked if he will be given more time;

“That’s up to the powers-that-be, isn’t it?

“They were so pleased with the last couple of performances.

“Let’s be honest, Sheffield Wednesday was a real big blow. We can’t hide away from the fact that our performance on that day was nowhere near where it needed to be.

“I’ve brought in some of those players. It’s not just on them, it’s on me as well. But I’ll be damned if anyone can do a better job with that group at this moment.”

The former Exeter City boss made the switch to the New York Stadium in October 2022, penning a four-year deal in the process. He performed an admiral job to keep them in the second tier, eventually securing a 19th-placed finish, six points above the drop zone.

Poor form this season has seen the boss come under scrutiny, but he now has two weeks to survive before a pair of tough fixtures against promotion contenders Leeds United and Hull City.

Writer’s View

Rotherham are currently in a precarious position and one that the fans will be desperate to see improve. Last season saw them halt six successive seasons of promotion and relegation and Taylor will hope that another drop into League One isn’t on the cards.

The manager remains confident that he is the best person for the job, as witnessed in his post-match comments yesterday. However, the decision is out of his hands and it will be interesting to see whether the board share his views.
