Former Ipswich Town star Cole Skuse believes head coach Kieran McKenna should sanction a loan move for young defender Elkan Baggot, following his consolation goal on Wednesday night.
The Tractor Boys hosted Premier League outfit Fulham at Portman Road yesterday in the EFL Cup, hoping to reach the quarter-finals of the competition. However, three goals from Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Munoz and Tom Cairney squashed the Blues’ dreams of progression.
Late in the game, 21-year-old defender Baggot pulled one back for the home side but it was too little too late for McKenna’s men. Nevertheless, it was a great achievement for the former Cheltenham Town loanee to score his first-ever goal for the club and just his fourth in professional football.
Baggot’s game-time has been limited this season and the young centre-back is yet to feature for Ipswich Town in the Championship under the Northern Irish coach.
Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk, former Town defender Skuse has claimed that Baggot should be loaned out to a team in League One to ensure his development doesn’t stagnate [quotes via Inside Futbol]:
“It would be great exposure for him. I know he had a couple of loans last season and we actually played against him last year.
“But it looks to me that even in the short period of that time when we played against him, from that to now he has grown as a personality and grown as a player in the way he conducts himself.”
“I think he warrants and deserves a good loan move to a good League One team up and around the top end of the league because he looks like he is ready for that.”

Baggot would be an excellent addition to any squad in League One and there would certainly be a number of teams in England’s third division lining up to take him on loan until the end of the season.
At 21, the youngster needs game time in order to keep improving and it doesn’t look like he’s going to get many minutes at Portman Road.
