Millwall Forced Into Change Of Tact In Managerial Hunt

Former Premier League manager Nathan Jones is being considered for the vacant managerial position at Millwall, according to Telegraph journalist John Percy.

The former Southampton and Luton Town boss is said to be a strong contender after “impressing in talks.”

Former Birmingham City manager John Eustace, and Australian Kevin Muscat, who is currently manager of J-League side Yokohama F.Marinos, have also been considered, but are unlikely to be selected.

Eustace left Birmingham after being replaced by Wayne Rooney earlier this month, and it appears Muscat will be difficult to prise away from the Japanese side, with them sitting second in the table and fighting for the title.

The ex-Millwall defender was previously thought to be the club’s first choice, but the Lions have had to change tact after being rejected by the former Australian international.

There are also other candidates according to Percy, but they are yet to be named, with Jones being regarded as a good fit.

The Welsh manager was last managing now-Championship side Southampton, before their relegation from the top flight. He was let go just three months in to his reign, taking charge of only 14 games before being replaced in February of this year.

The 50-year-old has previously had two spells at Luton Town between 2016-2018, and 2019-2022. He managed to guide the club in to the play-offs in 2022, winning Manager of the Season.

This will be his first position since the disastrous tenure with the Saints, but he would join with plenty of experience of the level.

Nathan Jones hasn’t always been successful in his management career, and his spells at Stoke City and Southampton were major setbacks for him. However, if he can find the form that he managed to create whilst at Luton Town, Millwall will have a manager capable of helping the them towards promotion.

They have been nearly men on many occasions when it comes to a potential promotion, but a mixture of Jones and The Den, which is one of the most difficult places to go in the Championship, could prove to be the perfect mixture for success.
