Former Charlton Athletic Boss Joins Championship Outfit

Former Charlton Athletic and Derby County head coach Chris Powell has been appointed as Danny Röhl’s assistant coach at Sheffield Wednesday, the club has confirmed.

Powell has gained coaching experience all over the country and even in the Netherlands alongside Alan Pardew at ADO Den Haag. His most recent experience came at Tottenham Hotspur as the Head of Coaching at Spurs’ academy but stood down from his position in August this year, as was first reported by the Evening Standard.

However, the ex-Leicester City defender was also part of Gareth Southgate’s coaching staff for almost four years, leaving the Three Lions as recently as March 2023.

Now, Powell’s experience will be put to work at Hillsborough. The 54-year-old has joined new head coach Danny Röhl’s backroom team a week after the 34-year-old was named as Xisco Muñoz’s successor at Sheffield Wednesday.

Performance manager Sascha Lense, previously a sports psychologist at Manchester United under Ralf Rangick, has also been added to the new boss’ team.

Speaking on the appointment of Powell, Röhl revealed how happy he is to have the ex-England international on board [quotes via club media]:

“I’m so happy that Chris is now here, he understands football and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“We met each other working for our national teams. It was immediately a good feeling, I’m feeling a good energy,” he added.

“We spoke about getting some experienced guys in. He understands the players, he’s had a great journey and has been at the very top level.”

Powell is an excellent coach, having been put in charge of Tottenham’s academy by Jose Mourinho a few years back while also being a member of Southgate’s staff for two major tournaments in recent seasons, including the Qatar World Cup.

This is a really smart appointment by Röhl. Powell knows the league and has a knack for developing players, particularly youngsters, which will only benefit the Owls in the long run.
