International Champion Could Be Set For QPR Debut This Weekend

New signing Reggie Cannon could be set to make his debut for Queens Park Rangers this weekend as Gareth Ainsworth’s side host Huddersfield Town at Loftus Road in what is a huge game for both clubs.

Cannon moved to Boavista in Portugal from MLS club FC Dallas in 2020 for close to £3 million but terminated his own deal during the most recent summer transfer window. Fabrizio Romano reported that unpaid wages were at the centre of his exit.

Romano insisted that numerous clubs were interested in securing Cannon’s services but the fullback spent three months as a free agent before eventually being snapped up by Championship outfit QPR at the end of September.

The USMNT international has yet to make his debut with the Hoops but his recent comments suggest that QPR fans may see him on the pitch at some point this weekend ahead of a colossal clash with Huddersfield.

Speaking after a game with the Development Squad on Tuesday night, Cannon told club media [quotes via the72]:

“I am looking forward to being in that senior shirt, I feel ready to go.

“Having spoken to the gaffer I want to be involved in whatever way I can in the upcoming games, so I can’t wait for the weekend,” he continued.

“Being part of the Development Squad on Tuesday was ultimately just about the fitness levels, but I am really looking forward to hopefully making my debut soon and helping this side.”

Paul Smyth primarily plays as QPR’s starting wingback on the right but Ziyad Larkeche was given the nod by Ainsworth during the 4-0 defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers prior to the international break so it will be interesting to see whether Cannon is given a run out this time around.

Since Larkeche is left-footed, it’s likely that Cannon’s only competition will be Smyth for the right-back/right-wingback berth, depending on Ainsworth’s choice of formation but the CONCACAF Gold Cup champion can also play as a right centre-back in a back-three, giving the manager flexibility.
