Sheffield Wednesday plan to have their new manager in place before next weekend’s Championship clash with Watford as talks continue with German coach Danny Rohl, according to The Star.
The Owls have been on the hunt for a new gaffer since parting ways with Xisco Munoz earlier this month. The Spaniard only took over the reins from the departed Darren Moore in the summer but oversaw the Yorkshire outfit’s worst ever start to a campaign. This ultimately led to his dismissal, with the club languishing at the bottom of the Championship with just two points.
Neil Thompson was placed in temporary charge and guided Wednesday to their third point of the season last weekend with a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield Town at Hillsborough.
A number of names have been linked to the post, including Neil Warnock and Danny Cowley, but it is 34-year-old Danny Rohl who now looks to have secured the job in what would be his first senior management position. However, he has pedigree in his native Germany, having coached at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and, most recently, the national team. He also had a brief spell at Southampton under Ralph Hasenhuttl.
News of Wednesday’s interest in Rohl surfaced over the weekend and talks are believed to have been ongoing since. The Star’s report claims that a deal between the two parties has not been reached, although both camps are keen to reach an agreement as soon as possible. It is also claimed that owner Dejphon Chansiri is optimistic that he can secure the respected coach’s signature.
There are just eight days until Championship football resumes following the current international break, and it is hoped that a deal can be struck before the trip to Vicarage Road next Saturday.
Writer’s View
Whilst Danny Rohl is held in high regard in Germany due to his antics within the coaching setup at Bayern Munich and the national team, it does seem a risk for a club already seven points off safety.
It was believed that Neil Warnock was keen on the position and that would’ve seemed the logical choice due to his experience and successes within the division in prior years. Even a short-term contract would have made sense. Wednesday clearly see this season as a ‘free hit’, where they can land an up-and-coming coach which could prove to be a gamble worth taking.
