Former Watford and Brighton & Hove Albion manager Oscar Garcia features high on Sheffield Wednesday’s shortlist to replace the outgoing Xisco Munoz, according to Yorkshire Live.
The Owls parted ways with Munoz earlier this week following their worst ever start to a season. With just two points from their opening 10 fixtures, the Yorkshire side are firmly rooted to the foot of the Championship and are already seven points adrift of Watford in 21st.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri made the decision to cut his losses, despite only appointing the 43-year-old in the summer following the departure of fan favourite Darren Moore.
A number of managers have already been linked to the post at Hillsborough and it is believed that Neil Warnock is interested after leaving Huddersfield Town last month. However, such is the club’s want to bring the new man in quickly, Oscar Garcia is desirable and available.
It is claimed that Chansiri would like to make an appointment ahead of the upcoming international break to allow the incoming manager ample time to get used to his new squad and surroundings before they travel to Watford later this month. Interestingly, the 50-year-old spent a brief period at Vicarage Road in 2014, taking charge of just four games before he stepped down with health problems.
More recently, the Spaniard managed Ligue 1 club Reims, but was dismissed in October 2022. Previous roles included Celta Viga and Olympiakos, as well as a successful spell at Red Bull Salzburg between 2015 and 2017.
Before that though, former boss Moore will be looking at inflicting more misery on the League One play-off winners tomorrow when he returns to Hillsborough with Huddersfield.
Writer’s View
Oscar Garcia would be a strange appointment for Sheffield Wednesday. That’s not to take anything away from his credentials – his time at Brighton was a relative success – but it has been nearly 10 years since he has managed in England and there are perhaps more suitable options available.
Neil Warnock is the obvious choice. He is a manager which galvanises squads wherever he appears and always seems to get results. Garcia may well prove to be a success if that is the route that Chansiri chooses to go down, but they would be wise to opt for the more experienced option if they are to have any chance of survival this season.
