League Two trio Forest Green Rovers, Gillingham and Wrexham have missed out on the signing of free agent Stuart McKinstry after the winger agreed terms with Scottish Championship outfit Queen’s Park, according to the Daily Record.
The 21-year-old has been without a club since departing Leeds United in the summer after the Championship club opted not to renew his contract. He had made one appearance for the Whites since signing for their academy in 2019, with his solitary outing coming as a late substitute in the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in November 2021.
McKinstry made the move back to his native Scotland last season, spending the campaign with Motherwell. He scored four goals in 25 appearances for the Steelmen having returned to the club in which he spent his youth career.
His spell at Fir Park was widely considered a success, although he did lose his place in the starting XI towards the end of the season. However, his form did attract plenty of interest from League Two following his release from Leeds, although it was reported earlier this week that his preference would be to remain north of the border.
Various clubs from Scotland’s second tier were also interested, although it looks as if Queen’s Park have now won the race. It is claimed that attacker has been impressed by the style of play implemented by manager Robin Veldman as well as the club’s excellent training facilities.
McKinstry’s arrival could give the Glasgow-based club a much-needed boost. They have lost their last five league games, although they have achieved successive promotions and will be looking at maintaining their place in the Championship this season.

Stuart McKinstry would have been an excellent signing for anyone in League Two and the interested trio will all be bitterly disappointed to have lost out on the exciting youngster, especially because he was available for free. However, it is no surprise to see the winger keen to remain in Scotland after his failed move to Leeds United.
His focus will now be on rebuilding his career and reputation in his homeland, whilst also trying to force himself into the national team setup having represented his country at under-17 level.
