Swansea City Suffer Blow Following 2-1 Defeat To Bristol City

Swansea City wingback Azeem Abdulai is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines following a hamstring problem suffered in training, the club have officially confirmed.

The 20-year-old was set to start for the Swans today as the team hosted Nigel Pearson’s Bristol City at the Swansea.com Stadium but the Scotland U21s international may not feature again for the Welsh side until December.

Swansea City eventually suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Robins, leaving Michael Duff’s side third from bottom in the Championship and winless in five. Just a point separates Swansea and fellow strugglers Middlesbrough who are sitting rock bottom of England’s second tier.

Speaking after the game, Duff revealed that Abdulai could be out for up to 12 weeks and may need surgery to help recover from the hamstring problem.

The former Barnsley boss said [quotes via club media]:

“Azeem was due to start, he was in our session yesterday, but he suffered a really bad hamstring injury.

“We are looking at 12 weeks, he might need surgery and he will go and see a specialist now.

“It is really disappointing for him because he had earned himself a start in the league, and it’s another thing we have had to deal with.”

Abdulai has appeared five times for Swansea City this season in all competitions, mainly off the bench. He has become an important squad player due to his versatility to play in midfield and as a wingback.

This is a blow for the club, Duff, and the player himself. Abdulai was finally starting to get some regular minutes and now will be forced to wait until December at the earliest before he’s back out on the grass.

The transfer window has just closed too so any replacements for the bench will need to come from within the ranks of the club.
