Charlton Athletic Set To Sign Premier League Talent

Charlton Athletic have agreed on a loan deal for Luton Town midfielder Louie Watson, according to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider

Despite being managerless after Dean Holden’s departure earlier in the week, Charlton is still operating with transfers as they prepare for today’s transfer deadline.

Featuring five times in Luton’s promotion-winning campaign last season, Watson is a versatile midfielder who can play in the middle, either wing or slightly more forward.

Who Is Louie Watson?

The 22-year-old started his football career at West Ham United in their youth setup, before switching to Derby County in 2020. Making 35 appearances for the Hammers’ youth teams and 25 for Derby’s U21 team, the majority of Watson’s experience has come from youth football.

Switching between the academy and the first time during his two years with the Rams, the midfielder made 15 appearances for Derby’s first team but failed to register a goal or assist. Moving to Luton last summer for an undisclosed fee, Watson featured nine times in all competitions for the Hatters, however, again failed to contribute in the final third.

Extra Ammunition For New Manager

With the Addicks continuing to get on with transfer business despite no manager being in place, Watson has the ability to play several positions, so should fit in with the new boss’s ideas.

Currently sitting 19th in League One, off the back of four straight losses, Charlton will be looking to turn their recent form around and a busy Deadline Day could be the cure.

Writer’s View

While it’s strange to see a club do business with no manager in place, Watson has shown a ton of versatility during his time in the Championship and youth leagues, which will certainly help his case when a new manager is appointed.

League One seems like a fair challenge for the Republic of Ireland U21 international, as he attempts to make the step up and play consistent first team football.
