Forest Green Rovers Dealt Major Injury Blow

Forest Green Rovers midfielder, Callum Jones, is set for a spell on the sidelines following a nasty injury suffered in their win over Harrogate Town on Saturday, as confirmed by BBC Sport.

Jones only joined Forest Green on a season-long loan from Hull City this summer and will already be experiencing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The midfielder would leave Saturday’s game on crutches and the injury comes as a significant blow for the Green.

It has since been confirmed that Jones fractured his leg and although no return date is set in stone, head coach David Horseman believes it will keep the Welshman out of action for four months.

The 22-year-old had impressed since joining the Rovers and has started each of their first two games of the new League Two campaign. Operating as the central midfielder in Horseman’s side, Jones had not disgraced himself at all in the midfield and given he only made two appearances last season for Hull, he’d be expected to keep on improving.

That improvement has however been halted given the extent of the injury, which comes as a setback for both the club as well as Jones. With very little senior experience to his name, this could’ve really been a breakout year for the 22-year-old.

Previous loan moves to Grimsby Town and Morecambe have both not really worked out for Jones, and going straight into the Forest Green starting eleven showed that he had been impressive in pre-season. During his four-year spell with Hull, the youngster has received very few opportunities in the first team and will be hoping that when returning from injury, he can make a case to push into the matchday squad.

Following a torrid season in League One last season, which would see them finish bottom of the table, it has been a mixed bag for the Greens as they adjust to life in the fourth tier. An opening day defeat to Salford City didn’t get the club off to the best of starts but they would however see off Harrogate on Saturday to get their first win of the season. Forest Green play Swindon tonight in what is somewhat of a local derby and both teams will no doubt have added determination to get all three points

What’s been said?

Speaking on Jones’ injury, head coach David Horseman said:

“Unfortunately it’s not a good one. He’s got a break in his leg, a small hairline break so it will probably keep him out until just before Christmas.

“It’s another one we’ve lost, a big one. I’m gutted for him, gutted for us because he was a big player for us, technically a really strong player so unfortunately it’s another one down and out for a significant period of time.”

Writer’s view

It’s a real shame for Callum Jones as he’s finally been given the opportunity to show the player who he could really be. The injury comes as a significant blow to Forest Green who aren’t exactly filled to the brim with quality in midfield. The win against Harrogate was however a good result and it’ll be interesting to see how they cope with Jones’ loss.
