Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle is of interest to multiple Premier League sides, following a promising start to the season, according to journalist Dan Marsh.
The 21-year-old has been part of the Tics youth setup since the age of ten and after multiple loan spells in Non-League football, Tickle has begun the season as Wigan’s first-choice keeper.
Securing a 2-1 win against Derby County on the opening weekend, the Englishmen followed up his performance with another impressive showing against Wrexham during the EFL Cup this past week.
His rise over the Summer has caught the eye of a number of Premier League teams, with the Latics facing an uphill battle in League One following their eight-point deduction to start the season.
Impressing Early
With just four first-team professional appearances in his young career, it hasn’t taken long for the goalkeeper to attract the attention of bigger clubs. Showing impressive shot-stopping skills and the ability to play with the ball at his feet through the first week of the season, Tickle has shown he will be needed to get Wigan off the bottom of League One.
With the club facing many financial problems over the years, any sort of fee would help massively, however, with the potential Tickle has shown early on and with the recent sales of goalkeepers in the division, it may take a high fee to prey him away from the Tics’ hands.
Writer’s View
It may be surprising to see many Premier League teams interested in an inexperienced player, however, in his limited time on the pitch Tickle has failed to disappoint. Despite having cover in the position with the signing of Ben Amos, a fee Wigan cannot turn down would have to be placed for a deal to be done.
As for the player, after finally earning a number one shirt at a respectable level, I think it would be best for him to spent some time gaining experience in the Football League. Moving to the top division would likely come with a loan or time in another youth setup, which could hamper his development in the wrong setting. A year in a solid Wigan team could teach him some lessons, with his future begin looked at again in a year or so time.
