Former Manchester United Attacker Signs For League Two Outfit

Former Manchester United academy star D’Mani Mellor has joined Sutton United from League One side Wycombe Wanderers on a short-term loan until January.

Mellor signed for the League One outfit last summer following the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford and made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Chairboys.

The young striker came off the bench on Tuesday night as Wycombe beat League Two’s MK Dons 2-0 at the Stadium MK in the EFL Cup which is set to be his final appearance with the club until January at the earliest.

Sutton United will take the 22-year-old on loan for the first half of the campaign and have confirmed that the new signing will go straight into the squad ahead of tomorrow’s League Two clash away at Barrow.

Experience in League Two

In 13 games for Wycombe, Mellor scored just once and so a loan move down a level could do the centre-forward the world of good with regard to his development as a player.

League Two will certainly not be easy for the ex-Man United man but Mellor has experience already in England’s fourth tier, having had two loan spells there already.

Salford City took the Manchester-born striker on loan for the first half of the 2021/22 campaign while Rochdale came calling for the second part of the 2022/23 campaign.

This will be the third loan spell of his professional career, having made his debut for Manchester United back in 2019 during a UEFA Europa League clash away at Astana.

Mellor will be the second centre-forward signing of the transfer window for the U’s following Harry Smith’s arrival at the beginning of the summer market.

Writer’s View

Mellor was highly impressive at Old Trafford, having joined the Red Devils as an 8-year-old and leaving at 21, graduating from the academy at 19.

However, the Englishman has yet to find his way in men’s football, scoring merely once in all competitions over the past three seasons. Perhaps we will finally see what he has to offer at Gander Green Lane.
