Former Portsmouth loanee Di’Shon Bernard has explained why he left Manchester United for Sheffield Wednesday in a recent interview with club media.
The young centre-back spent the second half of last season out on loan at Fratton Park after making the switch during the January transfer window, although he was limited to just 10 games with Pompey.
Nevertheless, the youngster still managed to impress the Jamaican FA who called the ex-United defender up to the first-team squad, debuting in a friendly against Qatar back in June.
At the end of the same month, it was announced that Bernard’s contract would be allowed to expire, leaving him as a free agent before being picked up by newly-promoted Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday.
In a recent interview with the Owls, the 22-year-old explained his move to Hillsborough, having been on the bench for the opening game of the season against Southampton on Friday [quotes via Sheffield Wednesday News]:
“I was on international [duty], so I was fully concentrating on that, and then when I came back I was figuring out where to move, and once my agent mentioned Sheffield Wednesday – the big club as it is – I thought it was something that I’d definitely get on board to.
“So once I heard about it, [my] agent got to work, and it got done.”
“It’s a place with great history and good ambitions really, and I think it’s somewhere that I can play and get better.”
Writer’s View
This is an excellent move for Bernard, although it will be much more challenging than League One given the increased quality and standards in the Championship
Nevertheless, the former Man United man has experience in England’s second tier, having spent the 2021/22 season at Hull City on loan from the Old Trafford club so the transition may be seamless.
